Learning About Thanksgiving
Students will learn about Thanksgiving and identify three things they are thankful for.
Introduction
  • Show students a copy of Play With Your Thanksgiving Food! and ask students if they have ever eaten this food before.
  • Ask the class what holiday they normally eat this food during.
  • Tell the class that today they will be learning about Thanksgiving.
 (10 minutes)
  • Read This First Thanksgiving Day: A Counting Story aloud to your class.
  • Ask students questions throughout the story to assess prior knowledge of Thanksgiving.
  • Explain to students that the first Thanksgiving served as a time to be thankful for everything the pilgrims had. Tell the students that today they will discuss things that they are thankful for.
 (5 minutes)
  • Show students the pre-made collage containing items you are thankful for. Explain why those items are there.
  • Tell the students that they will get to create their own collage of items that they are thankful for.
 (15 minutes)
  • Give each student a copy of Write and Draw paper and write the phrase "I am thankful for _____."
  • Have students collect 10 pictures of items that represent things they are thankful for. They should glue them in the draw section of the paper.
  • Have students identify one item in particular that they are thankful for and have them write it down to complete the sentence.
  • For students needing help writing this word, write it in yellow crayon and have them trace it.
  • Enrichment: Have students complete the Thanksgiving Math worksheet.
  • Support: Prior to this lesson, write a note home to the parents of students who may have trouble thinking of things they are thankful for. Ask their guardians to write down a few things. This way, you can help prompt them through the lesson!
 (10 minutes)
  • Have each student share their collage and share one thing they are thankful for.
 (5 minutes)
  • Read students the book Thanksgiving Is for Giving Thanks and discuss what the children in the book are thankful for.
  • Sit in a circle and pass a bean bag around singing the alphabet song. Whoever has the beanbag when the music stops should share their favorite part about Thanksgiving Day.
